Chapter 15: Moon-Line Check
Clara's POV
Torin put the green notebook on the kitchen table, and nobody touched it.
Sabine sat across from it with her ribs wrapped. The Redfern healer had stitched her lip and gone to wash her hands.
Pia stood in the doorway with her arms crossed.
"She wore that oil to my door," Pia said. "She smiled at me in the market."
"Pia," I said.
"I'm just saying it out loud."
"I smiled at everyone," Sabine said. "I was good at it."
She said it flatly, without asking for anything.
I pulled the notebook toward me and opened it.
The first page was a column of dates in neat blue ink. Beside each date was a sum, and beside each sum was a short note in Maureen's slanted hand.
Two hundred for the shop. One fifty for the oil. Three hundred, Thursday, for the jacket.
The jacket.
The first time I smelled roses on Rhett, I had bought him a new one myself.
I turned the page.
Every Tuesday and every Thursday was there for fourteen months. Maureen had paid for the nights I had spent alone at the kitchen table.
"Why would she do this?" I said. "She's his mother. She paid a woman to sleep with her own son."
Nobody answered.
"Sabine."
"I asked her the same thing." Sabine looked at her hands. "She came into my shop in the spring. She bought a white orchid, and she stood at the counter a long time."
"And?"
"She said Rhett was weak. She said a man like that needs a place to go, or he breaks. She said if I was kind to him and kept it quiet, the pack would be kind to me."
