Chapter 29: The Shared Field
The hall waited for me to speak.
I looked at the faces in the front rows. Most of them were gaunt, and all of them were hopeful.
I did not want to choose a man to lead them. I wanted to choose one who would not take the pack from them.
"Who commanded the warriors at the river?" I asked.
"Our war elder," said the oldest elder. "She stood with Maureen's guards and did not draw."
A woman at the end of the second bench rose.
She was sixty, broad and weathered, with a limp and a grey crop of hair. She had stood in the river line with her hands empty, and she had not knelt until the rest did.
"I did not kill for Maureen Harlan," she said. "I would not have started."
"Why did you come?"
"Because I swore to the pack, not to the woman." Her mouth twisted. "And because I did not know the half of what she was."
"Would you have taken orders from Rhett?"
"Not for a day."
A bark of laughter went around the benches. Rhett, against the far wall, flinched and then let it pass.
"Then I name you," I said. "Alpha of Cedar Hollow."
She stared at me.
"I never wanted it."
"That's why."
The elder asked the hall. Every hand went up.
She walked to the dais slowly and knelt on one knee. I put the iron ring on her thumb.
It was too big. She held her fist closed over it, and she did not look away.
"I owe you a debt, Moon-line," she said.
"You owe the omegas."
"I'll see they're fed."
"And you'll let the garden grow."
