Chapter 15: Discharge Day

The camera clicked before I could turn my body away.

Then it clicked again.

Angela came across the lobby with her arms out.

"There they are," she said. "Oh, look at them. The Fontana heirs."

People in the lobby turned around.

An old man in a wheelchair by the window.

Two volunteers in pink vests at the information desk.

A security guard by the doors who straightened up and put down his coffee.

"Get him to stop," I said.

"Don't be like that." Angela waved the photographer closer. "Mom's putting out a statement this afternoon. A family welcome. We just need one nice picture of the babies."

"No."

"One." She leaned toward the car seat in my arms and reached for the blanket over Charlie's face. "Let me see which one looks like Leo."

I stepped back so fast I nearly hit the elevator doors.

Charlie woke up and started to scream.

Leo moved.

He put his car seat down on the floor beside Libby's mom.

Then he stepped in front of me, between Angela and the three babies, and stood there.

He didn't touch her.

He just stood there, and she had to look up at him.

"Put the camera down," he said to the photographer.

The photographer looked at Angela.

"Don't listen to him," she said. "I'm paying you."

"You're paying him with what?" Leo said. "Mom's card?"

Angela's face went pink.

"That's none of your business."

"It's my business when you bring a camera to my children's discharge." He turned to the photographer. "This is a hospital. Those babies were born ten weeks early. One of them is still upstairs. If one picture of them shows up anywhere, I'll find out where you sold it, and I'll own it by Monday."

The photographer lowered the camera.

Then he took the memory card out and held it up so Leo could see it.

"I didn't know they were preemies," he said. "I was told it was a christening thing."

He put the card in Leo's hand and walked out through the sliding doors.

Angela stared after him.

"Are you kidding me?"
