Chapter 24: The Note

I didn't unfold it.

I knew what it said.

I'd written it at six in the morning on the last day of December, barefoot, with my mother's funeral flowers still on the counter.

"Where did you get this?" I said.

The housekeeper looked over my shoulder.

Leo had finished at the desk and was walking toward us.

He saw her and stopped.

"You," he said, not unkindly. "You were at the apartment."

"Eleven years, Mr. Fontana."

"I know. I'm sorry. I never asked your..." He stopped himself. "I never asked you anything either."

She looked at the envelope in my hand, then at him.

"The morning after the funeral," she said, "your mother came to the apartment at seven. You'd already gone to the airport."

Leo didn't move.

"Mrs. Fontana, I mean Ms. Lambert, was still asleep. There was a note on the refrigerator under the hospice magnet." She swallowed. "Your mother read it. Then she took it down and folded it up and put it in the kitchen garbage, under the coffee grounds."

The guard at the desk had stopped pretending to look at his screen.

"Then she called you," the housekeeper said to Leo. "From the kitchen. I heard her. She told you Ms. Lambert wanted you gone."

Leo's face had gone gray.

"After she left, I took it out of the garbage," the housekeeper said. "I wiped it off. I put it in my drawer. I meant to give it back to one of you. I kept waiting for the right day." Her voice broke. "And then she let me go in August, and I thought, well, it's too late now."
