Chapter 28: Through the Glass

Leo didn't move from the doorway.

"She's not on the list here," he said. "I can have security walk her out."

"Do you want to?"

He looked at his mother at the end of the hall.

She hadn't seen us yet.

She was looking at her hands.

"I don't know," he said. "I don't know what I want."

"Then stay with Lucy," I said. "I'll go."

"Louisa..."

"I'm asking you to let me."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he stepped aside and sat down by the crib.

I walked down the corridor in my hospital socks.

Teresa heard me coming and looked up.

She'd lost weight since the Plaza.

Her silver bob had grown out at the neck.

There was no pearl in her left ear.

She started to stand.

"Don't," I said.

She sat back down.

I didn't sit next to her.

I stood in front of her chair, the way she'd stood on my porch in April.

"How did you know?"

"The nursery page." She turned her phone over in her hands. "I look at it every day. Angela showed me how in the spring, to keep track of you." Her mouth twisted. "Now I look at it for the pictures."

"You drove up here."
