I read the whole page again, standing in the road.
She didn't explain anything.
She didn't mention the Plaza, or the pillow, or the foundation.
She said she'd kept every picture I'd sent, printed out, on her kitchen table.
She said she'd learned to drive the highway to Maine without missing the exit.
Then the last line.
I'm asking.
I walked back up the drive.
Leo was still on the ladder with a string of lights around his neck.
I held up the letter.
He came down.
He read it at the bottom of the ladder, and then he handed it back without a word.
"Do you want her there?" I asked.
"Term ten," he said.
"I'm asking what you want."
He looked out at the water for a long moment.
"I want my kids to have a grandmother who asks," he said. "I don't know if she can be one."
"Neither do I."
I sat down on the wobbly bench and wrote one line on the back of her envelope.
Back row. Four o'clock. Don't be late.
Libby drove it to the post office herself and made the clerk stamp it twice.
The day was hot and bright and smelled like beach roses.
