Chapter 14: The Elevator
By the time I looked again, the man in the grey coat was gone.
"Let him count the exits," Massimo said.
"We will talk tomorrow."
He passed my mother's gown to Aurelio, who tucked the garment bag under one arm.
"Take the front way," Massimo told him.
"The car's at the main door. We'll go out through the kitchens."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because three hundred people are about to rush you with questions, and I want you to myself."
He took my hand.
He led me out through a swinging door behind the dais, down a bright white corridor that smelled of bread and steam.
Waiters flattened themselves against the wall as we passed.
He pushed the button for the service lift, and the doors slid open on a steel box with a rubber floor.
We stepped in, and they closed.
For a moment, there was nothing but the hum of the cable.
I leaned back against the steel wall.
My heart was going, and my hands were still shaking from the dais.
"I did it," I said.
"You did."
"I took it back."
"You took all of it back."
"Did you see her face?"
"I saw yours."
I looked at him.
