Phyllis walked across the parking lot with the envelope held out in front of her.
Forty women in good coats parted to let her through.
"Thirty days," she said, quietly enough that only I could hear. "You think that frightens me?"
"I think you read the number."
"I read it twice." She tapped the page. "Austin's lawyer has a witness, Ada."
"To what?"
"That you knew who you were the whole time. Somebody close to you has already agreed to say so."
She smiled again and walked to her car.
The Guild women watched her go, and then every one of them turned and looked at me.
I got back into Rory's truck and shut the door.
"Who is close to me?" I said.
Rory started the engine.
"I can count them on one hand," he said. "And one of them has a tea mug at the inn that says World's Okayest Hostess."
We found Daphne in the inn's back office, sitting on the floor with her knees up and her phone in both hands.
