Courtroom B had green carpet and a smell of floor wax.
I sat at the left table in the navy funeral dress, with Rory in the first row behind me.
The woman from the puffy vest had come with a laptop.
So had the vet and both techs, in their street clothes, because the vet had closed the clinic for the morning.
Daphne sat alone in the last row with her handbag on her knees.
She hadn't looked at the other side of the room once.
Austin came in at five to nine in a dark suit that had been dry-cleaned.
His lawyer walked in beside him, holding a thin folder, and sat down a full chair away.
The judge was a gray-haired woman with half-glasses and a tired mouth.
She read the temporary order, looked over her glasses at Austin, and said, "I have watched the video. Twice."
"Your Honor," Austin's lawyer began.
"I've also read your filing on the Van Dorn property."
"We believe the estate is marital..."
"It isn't," said the judge.
The lawyer stopped with his mouth open.
