Chapter 18: The Water
The lake was so cold it did not feel like water.
It felt like being struck all over at once, and my chest locked, and the air I had held went out of me in a rush of bubbles.
I kicked.
Above me the surface was a pale grey ceiling, and I could not tell how far.
I heard nothing at all.
It was the deafness I had lived in for two years, whole and heavy, and I knew it so well that it frightened me more than the cold.
My coat dragged at my arms.
I got my head up once and saw the dock above me, black on black, and a man's shape at the edge, standing very still.
He was only watching.
Then the shape beside him moved, running, and a second body hit the water.
Hands closed around me.
An arm locked across my ribs, and a face came against mine in the dark, and I knew the shape of that jaw.
Peter kicked for both of us.
My head broke the surface, and I dragged in air and coughed up what felt like half the lake.
