Chapter 22: His Own Voice
"Let go of the microphone, Tobias," I said.
I said it quietly, but the speakers were still live, and it rolled down the steps.
He kept smiling and did not let go.
I put my hand over his on the stem of the mic and bent his fingers back one at a time.
He let go with a hiss of breath.
"He's right about one thing," I said to the crowd. "I was ill. I was deaf for two years, and I sat at his table and he talked about me like furniture."
"But my ears work, and so does my memory, and on the first of November he took me to a dock."
"Nina," Tobias said, through his teeth. "Stop."
"Do you want to know what he said there?"
The cameras swung to me together, a line of black glass.
At the foot of the steps a woman in a state police jacket had come through the crowd with two uniformed officers.
