Two weeks later, the same judge was waiting for us.
Same half-moon glasses. Same small courtroom with the flag.
But this time the benches were full.
The salon women sat in a row in their good coats.
The doorman sat at the end of their row in a tie.
The man from Millvale sat right behind my attorney with a pocket notebook buttoned into his shirt.
He hadn't looked at Byron once.
Byron hadn't looked at anybody but the judge.
Davey was at the salon with the girl from the front desk and a box of crackers.
I'd kissed him goodbye four times.
Byron's lawyer opened with the psychiatrist's affidavit.
He read the words "suicide attempt" slowly, the way he'd once read "tile floor."
Then he called Dr. Alexis Neville.
She came up the aisle in a navy maternity dress with one hand under her belly.
She was enormous now.
She walked like every step cost her something.
She swore to tell the truth and lowered herself into the chair.
"Dr. Neville, you lived in the Aldane home," the silver-haired lawyer said.
"Yes."
"What did you see of Mrs. Aldane's care of the child?"
