Chapter 24: Alexis's Baby
The elevator doors closed on Byron's back.
Alexis was still bent over by the wall, making a low sound through her teeth.
I knelt on the wet marble and took her hand.
It was ice cold, and she squeezed hard.
"Breathe out," I said. "All the way out."
"Don't." She shook her head. "Don't be nice to me. I can't take it."
"Then I'll be rude about it. Breathe out."
She breathed out.
A court officer was already on his radio.
"Ambulance is twenty minutes," he said. "There's a pileup on the parkway."
Alexis's face went gray.
"The university," she said. "My doctor's at the university. Please."
Clark was already pulling his keys out.
"Truck's at the curb."
Jeanine picked Alexis's purse up off the floor and pushed it into my arms.
"I'll get Davey," she said. "Go."
Clark drove.
Alexis sat in the middle of the bench seat, and I sat by the door with her hand crushed in mine.
She swore at every pothole on Fifth Avenue.
Clark apologized to each one.
"Why are you doing this?" she said between two of them.
