Chapter 28: The Last Story
I didn't take the flowers.
I didn't close the door, either.
I stepped out onto the landing and pulled it shut behind me, so Davey wouldn't wake.
Below us, Butler Street was still busy.
The barber across the road was sweeping his step under my red and gold letters.
Two women sat outside the bakery with coffee.
Next door, the brown paper on the empty storefront glowed from a work light inside.
The door under it opened.
Clark came out with sawdust in his beard and looked up.
He saw Byron.
He put down the board he was carrying, very carefully, against the wall.
Then he came to the bottom of my stairs and stopped there.
He looked up at me.
Waiting for me to say.
"Stay there," I told him. "Please."
He nodded once and put one hand on the rail.
Byron didn't turn around.
"Lee," he said softly. "We don't need an audience."
"You always had one," I said. "You said you wanted to tell me about us."
