Dess read my first draft aloud at her kitchen table, in her court voice, with Judge asleep on the printer.
"In response to the allegations of Mrs. Rosalyn Hetherington," she read, "I would like to say that I am deeply, profoundly, and sincerely distressed."
"Too much?"
"Joss. You are a lawyer," Dess said. "Nobody is distressed in a response. Cut the adverbs."
"I'm a little distressed."
"Cut the adverbs and keep the distress in your pocket."
We ordered noodles and worked until two in the morning.
By the end it was a page and a half.
I stated that I had identified the ransomware on the night of the attack.
I stated that I had traced it, within hours, to a stolen executive key belonging to Preston Hetherington.
I attached the board's vote and the log.
I stated that the hospital's IT lead had asked for my help in the server closet, and that he had watched every keystroke.
Last of all I wrote one sentence that Dess didn't touch.
"I have been a physician for six years, an attorney for fourteen months and a security researcher for ten," I wrote. "The first time anyone at this hospital asked me to prove it was when my mother-in-law got afraid of the answer."
