Chapter 21: The Steps
The courthouse steps were the same steps, and the wind off the lake was the same wind.
Three weeks earlier I had walked down them with my coat over my arm and nothing in my hands.
On Monday morning I climbed them with a folded sheet of paper and a crowd.
Dess walked on my left, in a thrift-store blazer, with a pencil in her braids.
Cliff walked on my right in his dress shirt.
The retired nurse of seventy-three marched a step behind us with her clipboard and her whistle.
Behind her came the charge nurse from the ER and two of Cliff's residents.
The stout dispatcher with the reading glasses on a chain came too, and a clump of Saturday patients in their church coats.
Nobody had asked them to come.
At the top, a dozen microphones were already waiting.
I stopped at the same spot where Bennett had gone down on his knees.
"Good morning," I said.
The cameras swung.
I took a moment before I went on.
"My name is Josephine Tarrant. Most people call me Joss. I'm a physician, licensed in Ohio for six years. I am an attorney, admitted to the Ohio bar fourteen months ago. I'm also the person who wrote under the name Quill in the messages published on Saturday night."
