Chapter 12: Four Percent
I did not speak to Patrick until we were in his car with the doors shut.
He had followed me out of the club, and I let him.
He started the engine and did not drive.
"Is it true?" I said.
"Yes."
"Four percent."
"Larkspur Capital is mine. I bought into Alden Technologies eighteen months ago through three companies, so Bradley would not know it was me."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted Littlebird, and he would not sell it to me. A seat at the table was the only way to get a look at the books." He kept his eyes on the windshield. "I planned to buy him out when the Series C failed, and I told no one."
"You sat in a diner and told me you wanted a partnership."
"I did."
"You didn't tell me you already owned a piece of the man who stole it."
"No. That was a mistake."
"It was a lie."
"It was a thing I left out." He turned his head and looked at me directly. "I won't call it anything smaller than that. Marilyn used it in front of a hundred people because she knew it would cost me the thing I wanted most."
"What's that?"
"Your trust."
My hands were shaking in my lap.
I pressed them flat on my stomach until they stopped.
"Is there more?" I asked.
He did not answer at once.
"There's one more thing," he said finally. "I want to be sure of it before I say it. When I'm sure, you'll be the first person I tell."
"That's not an answer."
"No. It's the truth."
I looked out at the club lawn, where women were coming out in small shocked groups and not looking at us.
