Chapter 15: Lacey
Lacey was sitting in Bea's reception area when I got off the elevator on Monday morning.
She wore a gray sweatshirt that was too big for her and old jeans, and her honey-blond hair was greasy and tied in a knot.
She had no belly at all.
She stood up when she saw me, and her whole body shook.
"Cora," she said.
"Don't say my name."
"Please. Five minutes."
"Bea," I said without turning, "why is she in your office?"
"She walked in at eight and asked for me by name," Bea said behind me. "Security wanted to throw her out. I said wait."
"I should have let them."
"Maybe. But she's asking to talk, and I'd like it on tape."
I looked at Lacey for a long time.
Nine years ago she had held my hair back when I was sick at our MIT graduation party.
Three years ago she had driven me to my second IVF round and sat in the waiting room with a magazine she did not read.
"Conference room," I said. "Bea records. You sit across the table, and you don't touch me."
"I won't."
We went in.
Bea set a small recorder on the glass and pressed the button.
Lacey sat down and put both hands flat on the table to keep them still.
"Marilyn threw me out after the robe," she said. "She canceled my cards. My phone is off. I've been sleeping in my car behind a grocery store."
"Good," I said.
"I know you think so."
"I think a lot of things. Start with the baby."
Her mouth trembled.
"There is no baby," she said. "There never was. I've worn that thing for eleven weeks, and Marilyn had me wear it to bed so I'd get used to the weight."
"Say who told you to."
