Chapter 10: The Paper
On Monday morning, the lecture hall at Eastgate held two hundred students, one dean, and a printed photograph of Jude's face.
Someone had pinned it to the whiteboard at the front.
Under it, in marker, someone had written BOUGHT.
Jude stopped in the doorway with Ken a half-step behind him.
Two hundred heads turned.
"Mr. Parker," said the professor, from the lectern. "Please come down."
Jude walked down the aisle.
Every step was long and slow, and every row of faces watched him pass.
Somewhere behind him a boy whispered, "How much did the answers cost?"
Somebody else said, "He could buy the exam office."
The dean stood at the front in a charcoal suit, holding a sheet of paper.
It was the same sheet that had been posted online.
"This paper," the dean said, "shows your name and a perfect score on an exam that has not been given. It was sent to the department last night. It looks authentic."
"I didn't write it."
"Then how would anyone have your exam?"
"I don't know."
"A student with a family fortune and a history of coasting," the professor said, "a sudden jump from a C to a ninety-one on a quiz."
"A tutor," Jude said, hoarse.
"A paid tutor," someone called out from the back, and a ripple went through the room.
Jude's face burned.
He opened his mouth, and for one terrible second his mind went blank.
He could see George in the seventh row, with his arms folded and a look of grave concern.
"If the department takes this seriously," the dean began, "we may need to consider."
"Excuse me."
The voice came from the top of the aisle.
It was not loud, but it carried.
Ken walked down the steps with his patched bag over one shoulder, and he did not stop until he stood next to Jude.
