Chapter 36: The Title
Graduation day was hot and bright, and the quad smelled of cut grass and sunscreen.
Two thousand folding chairs stood in rows on the lawn.
Jude sat in the fourth row of the business school in a black gown that had been let out twice, with his cap tilted on his head.
Ken sat beside him, and had not stopped smiling since breakfast.
"Stop it," Jude whispered.
"I'm not doing anything."
"You're smiling at the dean."
"He's a good dean."
"He accused me of cheating in front of two hundred people."
"And then he apologized in front of two hundred more," Ken said, and squeezed his hand under the gown.
The speeches went on for an hour.
A man in a purple hood talked about the future.
A girl in a red one talked about the past.
Then a lanky professor stepped up to the microphone with a stack of cards.
"The Dean's Medal for Distinguished Improvement," he read, "goes to a student who entered senior year with the lowest standing in the business school, and finishes it with a ninety-one."
Jude sat up.
"Hey. That's not..."
"Jude Parker," the professor said.
The business school section roared.
Ken shoved him out of the chair.
Jude walked up the steps with his gown flapping and took the medal from the dean, who shook his hand for a very long time.
"I'm told you passed accounting on your own," the dean said.
"I had a tutor."
"I'm told he's quite something."
"He's the best," Jude said, and the whole lawn cheered, and in the back, an old woman in a blue dress stood up so fast that her chair fell over.
Jude stopped on the stairs.
