Chapter 15: Flour
Phelim had told me through his car window that my father would land on Saturday.
Cathal sat on my stoop Wednesday night, Thursday night and Friday night.
Each night I carried out a mug of tea and went back in.
On Saturday I closed the bakery at two, thanked the owner for the afternoon, and held the back door open for him.
He came in out of the alley with snow on his shoulders and stood in the warm smell of yeast.
The ovens were cooling, and flour hung in the light from the high windows.
I locked the door behind him and shot the bolt.
"On your knees," I said.
He looked at me for a moment.
Then he went down on the tile in front of the long steel prep table, and put his hands on his thighs.
I walked a slow circle around him in my work whites.
"This isn't forgiveness," I said.
"I know it isn't," he said.
"I'm not doing it because I've decided anything."
"I know."
"I'm doing it because I've wanted you on your knees on this floor since you walked into my church," I said.
"And I'm tired of pretending I don't."
His eyes closed, and I saw his throat move.
I pulled my apron over my head and dropped it on the floor.
I unbuttoned my white trousers and stepped out of them, and my underwear went with them.
I stood bare from the waist down in the cold bakery, with my shoes on.
"Look at me," I said.
He looked.
"Put your hands behind your back."
He put them there, and clasped them, and a muscle jumped in his jaw.
I stepped up to him and laid my fingers in his short red hair.
"You'll use your mouth," I said.
"You'll stop when I say, and not before."
