Chapter 19: The Seat
Fabrizio's eyes found mine across the hall, and his face did something I hadn't seen it do in five years.
It opened.
It was only for a second.
He sat forward, and his lips parted.
He could feel it from there.
Ninety-nine percent of my love for him was warm in me, and he was sitting in the front row, and he could feel it.
I looked away first.
"The claim is granted and the returns are complete," Donata said.
She had risen, and her voice filled the hall as it always did.
"This family accepts the Board's ruling. I move that the matter be closed and the families go home."
"Seconded," said a man near the back, too fast.
"No," I said.
Every head turned.
I let go of the table.
My legs were strange and shaky, but I walked around it and stopped in front of the chairman.
"There's one more form," I said. "It isn't mine."
The nurse stepped forward with the black ledger.
She opened it at the back, and took out a single yellowed page.
She handed it to the chairman without looking at Donata.
He read it.
He read it a second time.
"This is a full draw," he said slowly. "From a donor of nineteen."
The hall stirred.
"The charter bans full draws," said one of the other members, an old woman with a cane. "It has since my mother's day. It leaves the donor with nothing and it cannot be undone."
"Who witnessed it?" asked the chairman.
Nobody answered.
He turned the form around and held it up so the front rows could read it.
"Donata Montanari," he said.
Donata didn't move.
"The recipient sat on the hospital's transplant committee," the chairman said. "He has since died, and that committee moved him up a list two years long."
