Chapter 23: Her Name on the Door
The chairman came to the ward himself, with his white moustache and his worn gavel in a leather bag.
He stood in the doorway at nine on a Monday morning, and the baker took off his flour-covered apron out of respect.
"I have a ruling," the chairman said. "I thought it should be read in the place it concerns."
Eleven cots, and every face turned to him.
"The Board has reviewed the ward on Via Morello," he said. "It has found it unlicensed, unregistered, and the only place in this city that has returned a single percent of love to the person it was taken from."
"That's a nice way to say it," said the nurse.
"It's a true way." He took a paper from the bag. "The Board will license the ward from today."
The baker whooped.
"On one condition. A license must be held by a person, and the person must be the claimant who brought the largest claim in the Board's history."
He looked at me.
I had a mug in my hand, and I almost dropped it.
"Me?"
"You, Mrs. Sartori."
"It's Sartori. Only Sartori."
"My apologies." He almost smiled. "Ms. Sartori. The clinical director will be the nurse from San Anselmo, who has already agreed. The ward's patients will form its council. And the doctor of record will be someone with a license."
"Who?" said the nurse.
"The Board is still looking."
Nobody looked at Leone.
He was leaning on the wall by the nurse's desk with his arms folded, in a shirt with the right buttons for once.
