Chapter 19: Under the Desk
"You'll stand beside me," Jud said. "On the stage. In front of all four hundred of them."
"No," Yancey said.
It was Wednesday, two o'clock, and the corner office was full of afternoon light.
Jud sat at his desk with a sheet of paper in front of him, covered in his small slanted handwriting and a great many crossings out.
Yancey stood on the other side of it with his arms folded.
"It's your speech," he said. "You say it. I'll be in the room."
"That isn't what I asked."
"It's what you're getting."
"Yancey." Jud pushed the paper aside. "I'm going to stand up in front of the whole city and say you did four years for me. It's yours. The truth belongs to you. I want you beside me when it's said."
"Four hundred people looking at me," Yancey said.
"Yes."
"Looking at the ex-con in a rented tux."
"Looking at the man who pulled two brothers out of the Neches," Jud said.
"They'll look at the number." Yancey's voice cracked. "That's what they'll see. Four years, Huntsville, intoxication assault. They won't see the rest."
"Then they'll hear it from me," Jud said.
"And they'll turn on you."
"Let them."
"Your company." Yancey leaned on the desk. "Nine thousand people. Every contract with the port. Your name on all of it, and you want to stand on a stage and say I was drunk and drove your brother into a river."
"It's true."
"It's also the end of everything you built."
"Then it ends." Jud rose. "I would have given it all up the day I knew. I'll give it up now. Don't you see? I won't be able to stand it if you take the blame again."
