Chapter 22: After the Lights

The bay house door had barely closed before Jud had him against it.

"You stood," Jud said, into his neck.

"You told me to."

"Four hundred people stood with you."

"I saw." Yancey's hands were already in his hair. "I didn't know what to do with my face."

"It was a good face."

"It was a terrible face. Dewey said so. He texted me a picture."

Jud laughed, wet and shaky, and kissed him.

They hadn't spoken in the car.

They had sat side by side in the back of a hired sedan with their hands knotted on the seat between them.

Jud had stared out at the lights of the Gulf Freeway and said nothing for forty miles.

Now his hands were shaking on the buttons of Yancey's rented shirt.

"Let me," Yancey said.

"I can."

"I know you can. Let me anyway."

He took Jud's wrists and set them against the wood of the door, above his head, and held them there for a moment.

Jud's breath caught.

"You've been in control all night," Yancey said. "You were magnificent."

"You stood on that stage and told the whole city. Now it's my turn to take care of you."

"Yancey," Jud said.

"Shut your eyes."

Jud closed them.

Yancey undressed him slowly.

He took the studs from the white shirt and slid the tuxedo jacket over the broad shoulders and kissed the places that had been hidden.

He knelt to take off the shoes.
