Chapter 5: Camera Over the Register
The interview room at the Third District had one table and a window that did not open.
Cal sat with his hands flat on it.
He had not been in a room like this since the night of his arrest.
The older officer came in with a coffee and a tablet and did not sit.
"Mr. Bracken. Ms. Starke has filed a complaint. She says you cornered her and demanded money."
"She gave me an envelope. I handed it to the cashier."
"So you said." The officer set the tablet down. "Her lawyer is on his way. He is a very expensive man."
Cal said nothing.
Three years ago, nobody had told him he could say nothing.
The door opened and a man in a three-thousand-dollar suit walked in with Lena behind him.
She had taken off her sunglasses and put on a look of wounded patience.
"Officer," the lawyer said. "My client has been harassed by a convicted man for two days. We'd like him cited, and a protective order filed."
"The diner has a camera over the register," Cal said.
The lawyer did not look at him.
"We pulled it already," the officer said. "That's why I came in slowly."
He turned the tablet around.
The footage was grainy and clear enough.
Lena slid into the booth.
Lena set the envelope on the table.
Lena glanced at the window twice before he ever stood.
Cal carried it to the register, and the man in the van stopped filming.
"That's me giving a friend money," Lena said quickly. "That isn't a crime."
"No," the officer said. "It's a crime if a friend is paid to put cash into a parolee's hands while a man films it from a van. We found the van. It belongs to Ridgway Development's security contractor."
