Chapter 14: What He Gets
"Thirty-one percent," I said in the car. "Say the rest."
The driver kept his eyes on the road, and Everett sat beside me with his hands on his knees.
"Thirty-one percent of the development company, which holds the build and the leases." He didn't hurry. "When phase two signs, it's worth about forty million dollars over the life of the project."
"And you knew that when you asked for me by name."
"Yes."
"And you knew it when you took my clothes off on Tuesday."
His mouth tightened.
"Yes."
I looked out of the window until the car turned onto the Merritt Parkway.
Neither of us spoke again until the stone house, and neither of us went in the front door.
I walked around to the study entrance and opened it myself.
He came in behind me and shut it.
"Damon said ask him," I said. "I'm asking. What do you get?"
"I just told you."
"What do you get if I don't sign?"
"Nothing." He stood by the desk with his hands open. "The company folds back into the Council's land trust, and I lose the two years I've put in."
"So you need me to sign."
"I needed you to sign."
I heard the tense.
"Needed."
He took a folded paper out of his jacket and put it on the blotter.
"Read the stamp."
I didn't want to touch it, and I did.
It was a transfer filed with the Council's registry, one page, on thick paper.
Lyle Holdings assigned its entire interest in the development company to a trust.
The trust's name was the Hartigan Ward Trust, and its trustee was an office of the Council, not a person.
