Chapter 24: Rule Zero

The first foundation was poured on a Sunday, in the rain, and nobody left.

Concrete trucks idled along the old rails with their lights on.

The wolves of what had been Ashgate stood under borrowed umbrellas, and the old man with the cane held his over a toddler who was far more interested in the mud.

Camille handed out coffee from the back of a van, with a clipboard in her teeth.

Ned Garrity wore a hard hat two sizes too small, and the housekeeper had brought her own folding chair.

Toby had been told to stay behind the tape and had stepped over it twice.

I stood at the edge of the pit with Everett's umbrella over both of us.

He held it a little more over me than over himself.

I let him.

"The clerk sent the stewardship schedule this morning," he said. "There's one line you haven't used."

"Which one?"

"Line nine. A residence on site for the steward, for the length of construction." He took the paper from his coat. "You wrote it yourself, in June. The lawyers wanted it."

I remembered typing it.

I had pictured a trailer with a heater.

"There's a house," Everett said. "At the north end, by the water. The old stationmaster's. It's four rooms and a porch and a stove that smokes."

"Whose?"

"The deed says yours." He handed me the schedule. "It has no Alpha's name on it, and no trust. It has your name."
