Chapter 13: Not for Sale
"No," I said.
My father's hands stayed open at his sides, waiting for me to take what he held out.
"You haven't heard what I'm offering."
"The family house and the shares. I heard."
"Imogen, think."
"I am thinking." I looked at Cecily, between the two officers, her bandaged wrists held in front of her. "You came here because Leland called you about a kidnapping. You didn't ask whether I was hurt."
"You're standing there in one piece."
"Yes. I arranged that."
He took half a step back.
Simon did not move beside me, and he did not speak.
"I don't want the family house," I said. "I live in Mother's. And the shares come to me in five weeks whether you sign anything or not."
"Then what do you want?"
"I want you to watch what happens next."
The older officer cleared his throat.
"Sir, you'll need to come to the station as well. Your daughter's messages mention a payment, and we'll want to know where it started."
My father's face went still.
He did not say who had paid.
At six in the morning the police station smelled of burnt coffee and wet wool.
Simon had driven me there, and he sat on the bench beside me with his coat folded over his knee.
Cecily's lawyer arrived first, in a camel coat, with a briefcase and a flat, practiced voice.
"My client will say nothing further," he told the desk sergeant. "Intent to frighten is not intent to harm. We'll be asking for bail by Friday."
