Chapter 9: The Warehouse

"My driver," I told Hugh. "He wants to know I'm safe."

"Your driver doesn't text you from a grey number."

"He's careful."

Hugh stared at me for a long moment.

Then Leland opened his door, and the cold came in.

"Out," Leland said. "They told us to bring her to the side door."

I stepped out onto the gravel.

Behind me Hugh unfolded the chair and set it down on the stones.

He did not lower himself into it.

He stood.

He stood in the headlights with his hand on the car roof, straight and easy, and looked at me across the hood.

"There's no one here to see," he said. "Just you and Leland. So let's not pretend."

"Hugh," Leland said, in a low, warning voice.

"She already knows." Hugh smiled.

It was the smile of a man who has been bored for two years.

"I stood up at the gala because I was tired," he said. "I'm tired of sitting. I'm tired of Cecily's father patting my knee. And I'm tired of you looking at me like you saw."

"Then walk," I said.

"I intend to."

He closed the distance in four strides and gripped my upper arm.

His fingers dug in to the bone.

I did not cry out.

I had come here to be hurt, a little, in a way I could survive.

"Let go," Leland said.

"She's walking in, Leland. She's the exchange."

"The note said exchange for Cecily, not for the money."

"The note said what it said." Hugh jerked his head at the door. "It's four million, and we haven't got it. You know that. She's the only thing they'll take."
