Chapter 13: The Corridor

The door opened behind me, and I did not need to turn around.

Carl stood in the doorway with his phone in his fist, screen down against his leg.

He had heard it.

I could tell from his face, which had no color left in it.

"Carl," Emmeline said, with her head still on the pillow. "I asked for Geneva alone."

"I know what you asked for."

He came in slowly, and his boots stopped at the edge of the fallen flowers.

He did not step on one.

"You picked her out of four thousand swabs," he said.

"Honey, you were listening at a door."

"I was standing where I said I'd stand."

His voice was very quiet, and I had never heard it that way.

"Did you know about the baby?" he said. "On Monday, before the surgery?"

"I did."

"And you told Nigel to sign."

"I told him what the situation required." Emmeline sighed. "Carl, you carried me out of that tree when I was nine. You have always known I do what it takes to live."

"I carried you because you had a broken ankle."

"And I'm still carrying a broken ankle," she said. "Nobody has ever let me put it down."

There was a nurse in the hall by then, and a second one behind her.

Carl did not lower his voice for them.

"I sat in this room for three years," he said. "I drove you to every infusion."
