Chapter 17: The God in the Fire
The shape stood in the middle of the room.
It had no face and no hands. It was light, mostly. Light with a shape inside it.
The whole room was warm now and the smoke was gone.
"WHO OPENED MY EYES," it said.
Luca stepped forward.
"I did," he said.
He said it the way he said everything. Easy. Loud enough for the room.
The shape turned toward him.
It didn't have eyes but you could feel it looking.
"YOU."
"Yes."
"HOW."
"With the priest's blood," Luca said. "There's one left. I brought him here. He's on the floor behind you."
I was still standing at the altar with my hand bleeding into the hollow.
Min-jun was on the floor against the wall.
The light turned and looked at me.
Then it turned back to Luca.
"THE BLOOD IS A KEY," it said. "IT IS NOT A HAND. YOU DID NOT OPEN THEM. YOU TURNED THEM."
