Chapter 12: Trenton

Nico drove south on the Turnpike with the rear mirror turned toward the road behind us.

Nobody spoke for twenty miles.

Gina sat in the back seat with both hands over her mouth.

"Say it," I said finally. "Whatever it is. Say it in the car."

He kept his eyes on the road.

"I'd rather you saw it."

"You've had six weeks to say it."

"I know."

"Say it, Nico."

His jaw moved.

"She was alive when Marco left the room," he said. "The doctor turned the valve, and the doctor ran. Gina came in behind him and turned it back on."

I made no sound.

"I was in the loading bay with a transport case from the hospital supply closet. Gina brought her down the back stairs in her arms."

"Gina."

"I brought her," Gina said, from the back, in a ruined voice. "I'm so sorry. You were sedated on the third floor. I had four minutes."

I turned in my seat.

She was crying without any noise at all.

"Where is she?" I said.

"A house in Trenton," Nico said. "My cousin's cousin, a neonatal nurse who left the big hospitals. Two incubators in a spare bedroom. She has been breathing on her own for twelve days."

My body folded forward against the dashboard.

I could not tell if I was laughing or screaming.

"The coffin," I said.

"Sandbags and a blanket. I carried it myself so no one would feel it was light."
