"Where is she?" Marco said.

His voice was perfectly level.

Forty men stood behind him in the white glare, and not one of them was looking at me.

They were looking at the blanket.

"She's safe," I said. "She's where you will never touch her."

"I made her."

"You turned off her oxygen."

A man near the front shifted his weight.

I turned my back on Marco and faced the men.

I had never raised my voice in that family, in seven years.

I raised it now, and it carried down the wharf.

"I'm Ruggieri's daughter!" I said. "My father worked this pier for thirty years. Some of you carried his coffin."

Nobody moved.

"Your Don told you his heir is in Silvia Corsetti's belly. Ask him what the doctor wrote."

"Elena," Marco said.

"The cells did nothing. Four of my children died for nothing, and he knew by the third."

"Take her to the car."

"Silvia's baby came from a man called Donor Fourteen," I said. "Silvia chose him herself, because he looked like Marco. Ask him if he wants to see the book."

The silence on the pier was complete.
