Chapter 23: The Ring
Five hands went up, one after another, and nobody in the chapel breathed until the last was raised.
The old Don from Elizabeth did not count them aloud.
"Marco Barzini is no longer a Don," he said. "The Barzini vote returns to the table."
Marco stood between the two men who held him, and he looked down the rows of capos.
"Gentlemen," he said, and his eyes went to the camel coat. "You ate at my father's house."
Nobody answered him.
"The ring," said the old man.
One of his men cut the rope.
Marco rubbed his wrists and did not move.
"Take it off, or my man takes it with the finger."
Marco turned the gold signet round and round.
Then he pulled it over the knuckle and dropped it into the old man's palm.
It made a small sound on the leather.
"The docks go under the table's trustees," the old Don said. "The unions go back to their locals. The Barzini house is sold, and the money goes to the families of men your clinic touched."
"And the clinic?" Gina said from the second pew.
"Burned to the floor by Friday," said the old man. "The founder has been sent for."
He looked toward the side door, where two big men were standing with the doctor between them.
The doctor stared at the floor and did not lift his head.
"He goes where the table sends him," the old Don said. "Not to a court. Not to a cell. He will spend what is left of his life where nobody knows his name."
Nobody argued.
"Marco Barzini leaves New Jersey today with the clothes he is wearing. If he is seen in this state again, any man at this table may do as he likes."
