Chapter 8: Seven Days

Rosaria had made tea for four, and set out the good cups.

Nico came down behind me with his torn shirt held shut.

My mother-in-law looked at him for a moment, then at the buttons on the tiles.

"Your mother would have been ashamed of you, Nico," she said. "But she was never one to say it out loud."

"Rosaria," he said.

"Sit down, both of you."

We sat.

Gina stood in the bedroom doorway with her fists wrapped in the blanket.

Rosaria did not turn around.

"My goddaughter's cousin cleans for the Alinari family on Thursdays," she said. "She is also Gina's cousin. A girl with two jobs hears everything."

Gina closed her eyes.

"I came alone," Rosaria said. "Marco does not know I am here. I want to say it once, and plainly."

She folded her hands on the table.

"I knew what the clinic was doing," she said. "I knew from the first one."

I did not move.

"I held my husband's hand while he died with no grandchild in the house," Rosaria said. "Marco wanted a son. Silvia could not give him one. The doctor said there was a way. I called it a sacrifice, and I let him make it, and I would do it again."

"You looked at me across the Sunday table for three years."

"I did."

"Every Easter you gave me a rosary."

"I wanted you to have comfort."

"Rosaria, I buried a daughter."

"And I buried a husband. The family comes first, Elena. It always has."

She poured tea with a steady hand.
