Chapter 8: Alibi

"Ms. Prewitt?" said the taller detective, and she held up a badge.

"We'd like you to come down to the station and give a statement."

"About what?" Thane asked.

"A complaint that Ms. Prewitt has been diverting company funds into an account she controls."

"Who filed it?"

"Her husband."

Trevor lowered his eyes and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"I'm so sorry, babe," he said. "It was the only way to get you help."

I stood up, and so did Thane.

He did it so quickly that his chair fell over behind him.

"Detective, before she goes anywhere, I'd like to hand you something."

He took a manila folder out of his jacket.

I had not known it was there.

"What is that?" I whispered.

"The forensic auditor's interim note," he said, very low. "She worked until four this morning."

He gave the folder to the detective.

"The complaint says Ms. Prewitt added a second signer, C. Ainsworth, to account 4471 herself, and it gives the date. March fourteenth, at ten past two in the afternoon."

"That's correct," said the detective, reading her own paper.

"On March fourteenth at ten past two, Nadine was in Denver with me."

I stared at him.

"We were at the airport rental lot," he said. "We had flown in that morning for a client meeting, and we were arguing about the contract in my car."

"I have the rental receipt, the lot camera time and the parking stub. I also have the badge scan from the client's lobby an hour earlier."

"Mr. Rayburn," the detective said slowly, "I'll need to see those."

"They're behind the first tab."

She read.
