Chapter 27: The Shower
"Just us girls," my mother read aloud, and turned the card over to see if there was more.
There wasn't.
"You're not going," I said.
"Of course I'm going."
"Mom. She wants you alone."
"She wants to see if I'm afraid of her."
She tucked the card back in its envelope and smoothed the flap down with her thumb.
"It's a hotel tea room on Madison Avenue at one in the afternoon. She isn't going to poison me over finger sandwiches with forty girls watching. She tried that once already and it didn't go well for her."
"Then what does she want?"
"I don't know. That's why I'm going."
"I'll pick you up at three," I said.
"Fine. Wear something nice. They'll photograph you in the lobby."
On Tuesday, September first, I was in the lobby at a quarter to three.
The tea room was through a pair of glass doors at the back.
There were white roses on every table and a cake shaped like a wedding chapel.
Thirty girls in pastel dresses sat around a long table.
Shelby was at the head of it in white eyelet, with a little tiara of pearls in her hair.
