Chapter 39: What I Remember
Nicholas didn't look at Bryant's face.
He looked at the hand on the wine glass, the one with the ring.
"You've just said that in front of a waiter, two lawyers in the next booth and a man from the Post at the bar," he said. "I'd sit very still until September."
Bryant's eyes went to the bar.
There was nobody from the Post at the bar.
But he looked, and everybody in the booth beside us watched him look.
Nicholas put his hand on my back and walked me out.
In the car I sat with both arms crossed over my coat.
I didn't remember crossing them.
"He knows them," I said.
"Who?"
"My parents. Seven years of Sunday lunches. He knows which pills my father takes and what time. He knows my mother walks to the florist on Lexington every Thursday at ten, alone, because she likes to pick the stems herself."
Nicholas was quiet for half a block.
"And they don't know he knows."
"They don't know there's anything to know."
