He Was Reborn to Claim Me, But I'm Already Married novel · Chapter 21 of 24

Chapter 21: The Deed

I read the back of the postcard standing in the front hall, with my coat still on.

"He didn't find me. The box worked beautifully. Come to Montreal in August and bring your husband. The wedding is small and the cello is loud. D."

I read it three times.

Then I sat down on the third stair, the one that creaks, and put the card against my chest.

Ethan sat down beside me without a word.

He put his arm around my shoulders, and the stair creaked under both of us.

"She's all right," I said.

"She's more than all right. She's getting married and she has already invited me."

"You're her witness again."

"I'm hoping for a better pen this time."

I laughed, and my eyes spilled over.

In the kitchen the grandmother sat at the table in her cardigan.

She had a pen in her hand and a document the length of a bath towel.

"Come here, both of you," she said. "I'm signing."

"Signing what?"

"The house." She tapped the paper. "The deed to this house, which my husband left to me and which I'd like to leave to you, Ethan, today, before I forget which of us is the Sturgis."

Ethan stared at her.

"Gran. The house was the reason for the contract."

"That was your reason." She uncapped the pen. "I told you I'd sign it over when you married. I never said it mattered who she was."

"You said it had to be a wife."
