Chapter 4: Thirty Days
Cornelia Prescott arrived at nine, with a box of pastries and a smile.
She did not call ahead.
The housekeeper let her in because nobody in Boston had ever told Cornelia Prescott no at a front door.
Ethan's grandmother was already at the breakfast table in a cardigan the color of old mustard, reading the Globe with a magnifying glass.
She was eighty-one and had buried a husband, a son and two dogs.
She did not get up.
"Cornelia," she said. "You've lost weight. Sit down before you fall over."
"You're too kind."
Cornelia sat and set the pastry box in the center of the table like a peace offering.
Nobody touched it.
Ethan stood by the window with his arms folded, and I sat across from Cornelia with my wrist in a long sleeve.
Jocelyn was still upstairs.
"I'll be brief," Cornelia said. "My son has taken a liking to Jocelyn Winslow."
"Your son took her hand in front of sixty people," I said. "She gave the rose back."
"Girls are shy." Cornelia turned to me with great kindness. "Audra, dear, I'd like Jocelyn at our table on Sunday. One dinner. That's all I'm asking."
"And if she says no?"
"Then I'm afraid the note comes due."
She said it so pleasantly that for a second nobody understood her.
"My father borrowed two point four million dollars from your husband thirty-five years ago," Ethan said, flat. "You've never called it."
"It was never convenient before."
"And now it is?"
"Now I'm choosing a daughter-in-law, and I find I don't care for the way the Sturgises have treated my family." Cornelia lifted one shoulder. "Of course, there's an easier way. A marriage of eight months can be put away very quietly, Audra. No scandal. No papers. I'd even tear up the note as a gift."
