Chapter 20: Equal
The next morning the herald read the old rules aloud, one at a time, to a Hall that had not slept.
He was a thin man with a sore throat, and he plainly hated every line.
"An omega shall not own land past the age of twenty-three, unless he is bonded to an alpha."
"Struck," said the King.
A clerk drew a line through it, and the omegas at the back of the Hall made a small, startled noise.
"An omega shall not speak at Court, save the one who holds the Moon Seat."
"Struck."
"I'd like to say something about that one," called a voice from the back.
Every head turned.
A young omega in plain grey had stepped out from behind a pillar, shaking, with his chin up.
He was perhaps nineteen, and he looked ready to be sick.
"My name is not important," he said. "But I have wanted to say this for six years. My sister's pack sold her land because she was twenty-four and unbonded. She wasn't ill. She wasn't wicked. She just didn't want a husband."
"Say it again, louder," said the one-eyed elder of Apocalypse from the front row.
He said it again, louder.
When he finished, the Hall was silent, and then the elder began to clap.
She clapped slowly and loudly until the Apocalypse benches joined her.
Then Genesis joined, and Optimus, and the omegas at the back put their hands over their mouths.
"Next," said the King, dryly.
"An omega shall not refuse an alpha's claim in public."
"Struck. With enthusiasm."
"An omega shall not leave his house unescorted after dark."
Lucas, standing at the side in grey with his three Primes, put up a hand.
"Your Majesty."
"The Seat may speak."
"I'd like to add an article."
