Chapter 9: The Blood Moon Court
By noon, the whole palace knew that three Primes were sick, and by two the Court had been called.
Melinda did it herself.
She went to the King's bedchamber with the healer's report in her hand and stood by his chair until he nodded.
"Sit the Court at sundown," the old King said, in his dry voice. "Let us see what ails my Primes."
So Lucas walked into the Great Hall for the second time, in the grey velvet she had chosen for him, and took his place on the silver chair.
The benches were full. Four hundred wolves faced him in a heavy hush.
The three Primes sat in the front row.
They were pale and quiet, with dark rings under their eyes.
They had come in the colours of their own packs, and every one of them sat looking at Lucas.
Melinda rose to speak. She wore white.
"My lords," she said, with a catch in her voice. "I take no pleasure in this. The Supreme Omega is my brother. I love him dearly."
A sigh went around the hall.
"But in four days, three of the greatest alphas in Atalis have fallen ill. The healer says it is not poison. It is not fever. Something is wrong in their blood."
"What is wrong," said Melinda, "is my brother."
The silence was total.
"He is unbonded, and he has been alone with each of them in turn."
"I fear he has used some forbidden art of the omegas to bend their wills."
"I ask the Court to find him unfit, and to give me the wardship, so that I may keep him from harming himself and others."
She lowered her head.
The old healer stood up on the second bench, her leather bag clutched in both hands.
"I found no poison and no fever, my lords," she said. "I cannot name what ails them."
"I only know it is in all three, and that it began the same night."
Melinda dabbed at her eye with a white glove.
