Chapter 19: Booked

Dane's fist hit Wyatt's shoulder instead of my face.

Wyatt didn't move his feet.

He took Dane's wrist in one hand and turned it up behind his back, calmly.

"That's twice," he said.

Dane swore and threw an elbow.

Pru was already coming across the floor, but she didn't have to.

A deputy in a brown uniform stood up from the pie table with a paper plate in his hand.

I knew him.

He was the one who had run Dane out of the motel lot.

"Mr. Corbin," he said, setting the plate down. "I told you what would happen."

"He attacked me!" Dane shouted. "Everybody saw him!"

"Everybody did," said the old woman with the cane. "Sit down and let the man work."

The deputy put the cuffs on, and this time there was a room full of people to watch him do it.

Nobody at the Grange hall made a sound until the click.

Then somebody in the back started to clap, and stopped, embarrassed.

"Assault on a physician, twice," the deputy said. "Taking a woman's phone. Bruising her wrist. And I'd say the bank will want to talk to you about page two."

"You can't do this."

"I'm doing it, sir."

Dane looked back over his shoulder as they led him out.

He looked at Sierra, and he looked at me, and then at the envelope in my hand.

I thought he would say something.

He didn't, and the Grange door closed behind him.

For a moment the room just breathed.
