Chapter 20: Director of Nursing

I didn't wait until Friday.

On Monday at eight I knocked on the administrator's door with my badge on and my hands in my coat pockets.

He sat behind a desk with a stack of budget sheets, grey-haired and rumpled, with reading glasses pushed up on his head.

"Ms. Holzer. Sit down. I heard about Saturday."

"Everyone heard about Saturday."

"The mayor's wife has been to my office twice, wanting to know if we can give you a medal."

"I'd rather have a parking space."

He smiled, a short dry smile, and waited.

"My old hospital has offered me my job back," I said. "Day charge. A nineteen percent raise."

"I assumed they might."

"I'm not taking it."

He took his glasses off his head and set them on the desk.

"May I ask why?"

I had practiced several answers on the walk over, and every one of them had Wyatt in it.

I threw them all out.

"Because I came here with a trunk and a quilt and nowhere to be," I said. "And in five weeks I have a room I'd rather be in than any apartment I ever signed for. I have a patient who calls me by my first name. I know where everything is in the pharmacy closet."

"That's not a hospital job. That's a place."

"Yes," I said. "It's a place. It's mine. I'm not staying for any man. I want to be clear about that."

"Noted."

"If Dr. Roark left tomorrow, I would still be sitting here."

"Good," the administrator said. "Because I need a director of nursing, and the last one retired in June."

I stared at him.
