Chapter 21: Not Even a Question
Wyatt's POV
"Wyatt. Finally," the chief from Portland said. "Twelve calls."
"Thirteen, if you count September."
Bethany had her hand still on my sleeve.
A page went off on her hip, bed two, a kid with a fishhook through his thumb, and she mouthed "go" at the phone and left.
I watched her cross the bay with her braid swinging, and I waited until the door shut behind her.
"I'll make it short," the chief said. "The director's chair is yours. Salary's three times what you make now. Resident teaching, a research wing, two floors of ER."
"It's a lot of ER."
"It's the best in the state. And I told you. Bring your charge nurse."
"Who told you about her?"
"Your staff nurse, the one who runs your department when you're asleep. Pru Moriarty says she's wasted on a six-bed ER."
"Pru called you?"
"She left me a very long voicemail," the chief said.
I sat down on the bumper of the ambulance.
"I'll give you until Friday," he said. "She'd run the nursing side. I mean it. Name your price."
I thought about it.
I want that on the record, because I'm not proud of every part of this.
For about the length of a breath, I saw it all.
The big building, the teaching hospital, my name on a door.
The man who had walked out of that same ER without shoes could walk back in wearing a coat that fit.
I'd spent five years wanting to be worth something to someone, and here was the proof in an envelope.
