Chapter 24: The Key
The rig came in at ten past two on Thursday with its lights on and Pru's hand flat on the horn.
I was at the doors before the brakes finished.
"Eight-year-old, fell off a hay wagon," Pru called, jumping down. "Wrist, maybe elbow. Awake and furious."
"Bed two," I said.
The boy on the stretcher was holding his arm up high, and he was not crying.
"It hurts," he told me, "but it's very cool."
"Good. I'm going to look at it, and I'm going to be fast."
Wyatt came out of the trauma bay with his sleeves rolled and fell in beside the stretcher.
We didn't talk.
I cut the sleeve and he checked the pulse at the wrist, and the boy watched us do it.
It took twenty minutes from the door to the cast room.
His mother cried in the hall, and Pru's mother, who had been in the waiting room since noon, held her hand.
When I came out, I wiped my palms on my scrub pants and found Wyatt waiting at the end of the corridor.
He had something in his fist.
"Bethany," he said. "Come with me."
"I have a chart."
"The chart can wait. I asked first."
I followed him through the double doors to the waiting room, and I stopped.
It was full.
The old woman with the cane sat in the front row with her hands folded.
The two loggers from the motel lot stood against the wall in clean flannel, and the administrator had come down from his office with his glasses pushed up on his head.
