Chapter 21: The Birthday Dinner

"It's my house, Sherilyn," my father said from his wheelchair, in a voice that rolled down the steps like a stone.

"Let my daughter in."

Sherilyn's smile did not move, but her fingers went white on her pearls.

She stood aside, because the nurse was watching and a monitor was beeping, and because he had said it in front of the driver.

I wheeled him into the hall, and the notary followed with his leather case, politely turning that silver owl.

In the front hall, where my mother's portrait had hung, there was a pale square on the wallpaper.

I looked at it for a second, and then I walked to the study.

Rafferty came with me, and he closed the door behind us and leaned his back against it.

The lake hung over the leather sofa where I had once watched two people laugh at me.

It was my mother's brushwork, willows and a river gone silver at dusk, in a plain gilt frame.

I took it off its hook, turned it face down on the cushions and found the stretcher bar.
