Chapter 24: The Saturday
On the second Saturday in May, Hedwig put four hundred white peonies in my father's garden.
She stood among them with her cane, directing a florist.
The gate at the bottom of the lawn was the one I had walked out of on the worst night of my life.
Today it was propped open and wound with ivy.
I stood at the top of the path in a plum silk wrap dress.
My mother's ring sat on my right hand beside the small sapphire.
Sonya stood next to me in a black dress and her denim jacket, with a bunch of rosemary instead of a bouquet.
"You're shaking," she said.
"I'm not."
"You are. It's very bridal."
She straightened my collar with her freckled fingers.
"He's down there pretending not to look at you. He's already been told off twice for it."
At the end of the path, between two rows of folding chairs, Rafferty waited in a rumpled linen suit.
The chip in his tooth showed when he smiled.
My father's hand closed on my arm.
He had come down the stairs of his own house that morning, in his blue blazer, with a cane and a nurse.
The cardiologist had given him twenty minutes on his feet.
"I'll walk you," he said. "All of it."
"Dad, you don't have to."
"I stood up once for ten minutes. I think I can manage forty feet."
We went down the path together, slowly.
His weight on my arm was a real weight, and I did not once look away from the man at the end.
