Chapter 20: The Hospital
Dwight's room smelled of floor cleaner and boiled carrots.
He lay propped on three pillows in a thin gown, with a tube in his arm and a monitor drawing green mountains over his head.
Without the cap, his scalp showed pink through his hair.
He looked like someone's grandfather.
I stood in the doorway with my father at my back and Jonas down the hall by the elevators, because I had asked for both.
"Abby," he said.
His voice was hoarse.
"Hello, Dwight."
"You came."
"Brooke called. She said you were asking."
"Brooke's gone to the police." He said it as if he were reporting the weather. "She went this morning and sat in a room for three hours. Marla won't take her calls."
"I know."
"They're going to take the house."
I said nothing.
"Half a million on it. The bank sent a man to the door yesterday." He turned his head on the pillow. "It was a bridge loan. She promised me. When you signed the papers, it'd all come right."
"I'm not signing them."
"I'm not asking for Marla." The monitor beeped, a little faster. "I'm asking for me. I've got a bad heart, Abby. I'm fifty-five years old. I'll be in a rented room somewhere."
"You'll be in a rented room."
"You've got fourteen million dollars."
I waited.
It was what I had come to hear.
I wanted to hear exactly how he would say it.
"All you have to do is put your name on the page," Dwight said. "Sign over the claim to the house and the debt. We'll call it even. We raised you. We fed you thirteen years."
